A sworn translation is an official translation that is made to conform to the original by an experienced, sworn translator. It is often required for official documents that are to be used in legal or governmental contexts.
Sworn translation is often required for legal documents, such as notarized deeds, judgments, marriage or birth certificates, and academic documents, such as diplomas and certificates of study, when they are to be presented to Italian or foreign bodies or institutions.
Once the translation is completed, the translator drafts a statement in which he or she certifies that the translation corresponds to the original. The statement is then attached to the original text and the translation.
It is then submitted to the Clerk’s Office of the relevant court where the Registrar will stamp the translation, thus confirming the asseveration.
Generally, the sworn affidavit of a translation involves the payment of government fees (revenue stamps). These marks vary depending on the type of document and the length of the translation.
